Girls Incorporated of Holyoke to participate in a five week yoga collaboration

Holyoke, MA (January 29, 2010) Girls Incorporated of Holyoke will participate in a variety of fitness activities during the week of February 1st in recognition of the 24th annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD).

NGWSD began in 1987 as a day devoted to Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her dedication to equality for women in sports. NGWSD now uses this day to celebrate the involvement and achievements of female athletes. The theme of this year’s event is “Stay Strong, Play On”, encouraging persistence and perseverance in spite of the many obstacles and hardships girls and women face. To learn more about NGWSD, please visit www.NGWSDCentral.com

Girls Inc. of Holyoke is excited to participate in NGWSD activities that are designed to promote a healthy and active lifestyle to adolescent and teen girls. One such activity will be participating in a five week yoga series at Vega Yoga & Movement Arts.

Teen girls will be traveling to the yoga facility to attend forty five minute yoga sessions, which will be taught by Debra Vega, co-director of Vega Yoga & Movement Arts. “I am thrilled about the collaboration between Girls Inc and Vega Yoga! What an honor to be able to share all the gifts of yoga with these young women. Through various fitness activities such as yoga, the girls will not only learn different ways to move their bodies to stay active and healthy, but will also gain a sense of self-respect and discipline which are qualities they can carry with them into the rest of their lives,” stated Debra Vega.

Girls Inc. Participates in 9/11 National Day of Service & Remembrance

Holyoke, MA (September 11, 2009) This year commemorates the first September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. The tragic events of September 11, 2001 inspired Americans to come together in a remarkable spirit of unity and compassion. Eight years later, September 11 continues to evoke strong emotion and is an homage to sacrifice and a call to action.

In April, President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act which, for the first time, officially recognizes September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. This year, on September 11, the President, the Corporation for National and Community Service, MyGoodDeed and the 9/11 families ask all Americans to remember and recommit to participate in their communities. President Obama stated, “No force for change is more powerful than that of Americans who are making a difference in their communities.”

The Obama administration encourages Americans everywhere to get involved in their communities. Girls Incorporated of Holyoke and Girls Inc.’s around the country responded to this call to action.

C-SPAN bus brings civics lessons to Holyoke youth

HOLYOKE -- The C-SPAN Civics Bus made two stops in Holyoke last week spreading its educational message to young people at Girls Inc. and the Boys & Girls Club.

For 26 girls between the ages of nine and 18, civics came to life on Aug. 14 as the C-SPAN Civics Bus made a special stop at Girls Incorporated of Holyoke.

Sarah Dunton, director of youth development for Girls Inc., noted that C-SPAN had contacted their office after some initial research about the organization. "They discovered we have programming specifically for technology and media, and they thought, and we agreed, that it would be a great fit for the programs we currently offer and for the girls participating in our summer programs," Dunton said during an interview with Reminder Publications.

Dunton explained that C-SPAN customized the experience for the girls and talked at length about women in media and technology positions, as well as future opportunities.
